Chapter Eight
It had been three days. Just as heâd predicted, Hunter made himself scarce. From the deepest recesses of her kitchen, Claire watched him come and go. He moved like a man whose focus consumed him. As if he had a case of tunnel vision so severe that it impaired his ability to look anywhere but ahead, straight ahead. He left early in the morning and came home late at night. In between, Claire caught glimpses of him.
She wished heâd pop in, even if it was only to tell her that sheâd left the garden hose on too long and given him a mess to walk through on his way to the garage. Or that heâd run out of milk and could he borrow some of hers? Or maybe he would bring over some gourmet tuna for Zoey, who had become cross and disgruntled ever since sheâd been deprived of her treat and had started casting accusing glances in Claireâs direction.
She would have settled for just about anything from Hunter. Even a wave. Or a beep of his car horn. Instead she had to content herself with noting everything about him from a respectful distance. How he left in the morning, his hair still damp from the shower. How he always walked out the door strapping his watch on as the screen door slammed behind him. How he always wore the casually professional look: dark slacks, loafers and a three-button golf shirt.
In her wildest fantasies, Claire imagined how those shirts would look mingled in the laundry with hers. Buttercup goldâthe shirt that best reflected his hazel eyesâwould mix with her buff-colored slacks. The marine-blue one would tumble with her jeans. The sooty black one that mimicked his textured dark hair would swish in the washer with her dress slacks and silky blouse.
Laundry would no longer be a chore; it would be a pleasure. For sheâd know that every time he slipped a shirt out of the drawer it had been her hands that put it there. That he, and that shirt, would come home to her each day, every day.
The last night theyâd spent together had been blissfully relaxing. Theyâd talked as if the past had never happened. As if the grueling years of enduring their separation had been wiped away.
Claire wondered if he would make a move to permanently repair their relationship if she forced the issue. She wondered if they could even last together, after everything that had happened. How much, really, had they changed?
Sheâd worn herself near through with thinking. About him, and her, and everything their lives would mean if they put them together and tried again.
In the three days since sheâd last seen him, sheâd neglected her work. Sheâd postponed making calls, and sheâd missed a deadline to get a listing in the paper. Sheâd also pushed back an open house. Her lack of concentration and focus could only be attributed to one thing: Hunter Starnes and the mind-boggling effect he had on her.
